SanStone Health has long been an advocate for long-term care by providing added educational incentives for its staff. “Each facility has community involvement events, where they promote and educate, so the certified nursing assistants that have been with us for five or ten years, our stable rocks, may go through a medication program,” said Jackie Woolard, the regional operations manager at SanStone Health. She recently joined the LTC Heroes podcast and spoke to Experience Care’s Peter Murphy Lewis about SanStone Health’s successful retention strategy amid the staffing crisis. Watch the interview below:
Woolard explained that SanStone offers a wide variety of educational programs and allocates a portion of its budget to help CNAs advance through an LPN program and LPNs get through RN programs.
By encouraging professional growth among its staff, SanStone Health is able to meet resident needs consistently. “Attaching importance to training is how we get continuity of care,” Woolard said. “If our staff is constantly changing or if we use agency staff, which SanStone doesn’t, how can we provide the best quality of care?”
Additionally, the team works hard to introduce as many potential caregivers to the industry as possible. “The way we attract, motivate, and educate is to offer a lot of internships,” she said. “We also prioritize mentoring and teaching to draw in the younger generation, to give them a voice.” This well-calculated approach is at the heart of SanStone’s success in navigating the staffing crisis and developing model caregivers that will serve seniors for years to come.
